I had been reading a lot of adult and new adult fantasy fiction romance lately…and I was a little worried for myself trying to read a YA book again BUT this book did not disappoint. I see why it has over a 4 star review on Goodreads right now. I finished this first book in 24 hours…
Ok onto the story…So, we find out pretty fast about the world of magic. I really enjoyed Elise’s different twist on how magic works in this world. (You’re still learning A LOT about it by the end of the first book) I also loved that this seems like medieval times with magic. There are kings, queens, princes, palaces and the power struggle/court politics that come with that. I usually enjoy books and movies set around this so it definitely helped peek my interest.
For the characters, I liked that it showed Vallah (the main character) getting to know herself and what she actually may want out of life. She’s a notorious book nerd so it was funny reading and Elise making not so subtle nods about living with your nose in a book… lol It’s about going outside your comfort zone, not judging people prematurely and allowing yourself to live/learn. These “lessons” really are great for young adult (or even adult really…).
There were some twists I was expecting and ones I really was NOT expecting. So she did a great job keeping me engaged and on the edge of my seat. The ending going into book 2 was just right and I can’t wait to start it.
